Description Works within a team and is responsible for safe and efficient operations of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for data collection, mapping, and treatment of mosquito breeding sites within Lee County Florida. The UAS Pilot Intern will work closely with the UAS Pilot and Lead GIS Imagery Analyst and be capable of serving as Remote Pilot at Controls and/or Visual Observer during data acquisition flights and other mosquito control operations as needed. This is an unpaid internship opportunity.
Essential Functions - Primarily operate as the Visual Observer and will be trained for specialized Remote Pilot at Controls (RPAC) duties. Assists with flight planning, flight execution and risk management
- Assists UAS Pilot in conducting pre-flight planning, safety briefings, checklists, FAA airspace and airport tower coordination, and ensures overall mission-readiness
- Performs drone pre-flight and post-flight inspections, check all EO/IR, thermal cameras, radar, and LiDAR sensors, evaluate the environment for tall structures, power poles, towers, other obstructions, various payload operations, camera settings, and weather conditions.
- Works closely with the UAS Pilot and Lead GIS Imagery Analyst to schedule and execute aerial missions, including pre-flight UAS equipment set up, handling granular pesticide, post-flight UAS equipment tear-down, record keeping, maintenance and storage.
- Work closely with UAS contracted staff both in person and remotely
- Responsible for wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Communicates with the public in a professional and courteous manner and refer all inquiries outside of area of expertise back to the appropriate person at the District
- Follows all Districts Safety policies and procedures and comply with all local, state and federal regulations at all times
- Attends all assigned training

Qualifications: - Understand the FAA requirements for UAS operations in the National Airspace System
- Very strong technical capacity; ability to learn and master multiple software packages, pieces of hardware and different workflows
- Must have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and have the ability to learn and operate internal programs including databases
- Ability to effectively communicate in front of audiences
- Must be able to work a varied schedule including nights and weekends
- Ability to fly in helicopters
- Must be able to read and understand chemical label instructions in English
- Must communicate effectively in English
- Must pass the Part 107 remote pilots certification within three months of hire. LCMCD will pay the testing fee.

Physical Requirements: Physical activity is required including lifting, reaching for, pulling and carrying up to forty pounds and climbing in and out of vehicles and a variety of other equipment. Must be able to use hands and fingers to type. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is regularly required.
Work Environment: The work environment varies and could include offices, vehicles, helicopters, boats, heliports, urban streets, rural neighborhoods, mangroves, fields, islands, and open water. Exposure to all types of weather is required when the position is working outside, including high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind. Occasional local, regional and national travel may be required. Noise level is usually low but occasional exposure to loud and moderate noise levels when around aircraft, helicopters, tanker trucks, pony motors and a variety of other motors and engines. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes and insects may be required.
