Job Title: Legal Assistant (Pro Bono Team) (Tiers: I-IV) 

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Pro Bono Director

Compensation: $23.00 to $35.00 Hourly DOE + Benefits 

 

Inland Counties Legal Services (ICLS) is seeking a legal assistant to join our Pro Bono Team to assist with intake; case compliance; scheduling appointments and managing calendars; organizing and managing case files; providing advocates with direct assistance; identifying areas of community and client need; supporting pro bono projects with the Pro Bono team, including legal projects and student programs; and assisting in other Pro Bono programs.

 

ICLS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing free legal services to people of limited means residing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. ICLS targets services to seniors and those in the greatest social and economic need. ICLS provides legal assistance in eight practice groups: Elder, Family Law, Consumer, Housing, Immigration, Systemic & Impact Litigation, Health Law, and Public Benefits & Education; and a Pro Bono Program, operating volunteer-enhanced client programs. Overview of Position & Responsibilities 

The core responsibilities for the Legal Assistant (Pro Bono) position are as follows: 

  • Assist with completing intake to determine applicant eligibility. 

  • Become familiar with and follow federal regulations that are applicable to Legal Services Corporation funding and other funder requirements as appropriate as well as ICLS’s policies and procedures. 

  • Participate in the Compliance Task Force and review closed cases for the Pro Bono Team for funder compliance issues.

  • Provide verbal and written translation for clients as requested, if applicable. 

  • Communicate with clients, court officials and opposing counsel on behalf of the advocate, including phone calls, emails, and letters. 

  • Prepare, serve, sign, and file proofs of service.

  • Maintain and protect highly sensitive and confidential case information.

  • Operate case file managing system; organize case files.

  • Organize the team’s calendar and appointments; meet with clients to complete intake applications; prepare files and case records; upload and review mail; to assume delegated duties from the Practice Group Director, or other duties as assigned or may be required by attorneys or paralegals. 

  • Provide advocates with direct assistance, such as helping with research, gathering necessary documents from clients.

  • Personally deliver/file pleading and correspondence at the courthouse or file via email. 

  • Deliver mail to the nearest US Post Office.

  • Maintain organized physical and electronic files, including copies of documents and correspondence. 

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or Associate's Degree preferred. 

  • 1-year relevant experience. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to race, equity, and inclusion initiatives. 

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with individuals from diverse communities. 

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and legal document management. 

  • Experience with Cloud-Based environments. 

  • Strong project management skills, including organization and ability to multi-task. 

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal service. 

  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 

  • Strong typing skills. 

  • Previous calendaring experience in a high-volume environment. 

  • Ability to be flexible to adapt and act quickly when urgent matters require attention.

  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly. 

  • Access to, or ability to obtain highspeed home internet for remote work. 

  • Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiency. 

  • Language: Ability to read, write and communicate in English with Spanish being a plus.
