Summary Under direction, is responsible for interpreting dialog, documents or other materials essential to Criminal, Civil, County Probate, Juvenile and San Antonio State Hospital Court proceedings; assists with routine clerical duties; and performs related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities - Interprets from English to Spanish and Spanish to English in Criminal, Civil, County, Probate, Juvenile and San Antonio State Hospital Court proceedings including trials, pleas,hearings, mediation during settlement week and any other matters at the request of the courts
- Translates documents, and related material used in the Courts and other County Departments such as Elections, the District Attorney's Office, Commissioners Court and others as requested
- Assists office staff with clerical duties including typing, filing, faxing, copying, answering phones and locating information on the mainframe terminal
- Contacts and schedules outside interpreters for Spanish and other foreign languages
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications - Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of interpreting or translating experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must be a licensed court interpreter in good standing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
- Considerable knowledge of the written and spoken English and Spanish language, both formal and informal; good knowledge of legal procedures and court decorum; knowledge of the translation modes, including simultaneous, consecutive and sight; knowledge of legal terminology
- Skill in dealing with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals
- Ability to operate a personal computer and basic office equipment; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to listen attentively for long periods of time; ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the general public
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Must secure and maintain a pre-employment physical and drug screen
- Must secure and maintain a background check and clearance
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: - Working conditions are primarily in an office or courtroom environment
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5 lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to reaching, twisting, handling and walking to perform the essential functions
